Case Study: Reducing 999 calls through consistent, personalised support for David

At BelleVie, we’re tackling the care crisis with a revolutionary approach that prioritises strong communities, meaningful relationships, and technology-driven efficiency. By shifting away from the traditional “time-and-task” model, we create a fulfilling environment for both care recipients and workers. We don’t just preach change; we demonstrate it with real people. This case study illustrates our unique method through the story of David, a 94-year-old with COPD, highlighting how our personalised, consistent care reduced his 999 calls and improved his quality of life.

David, aged 94, suffered from Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and was already receiving at-home care from a traditional, time-and-task care provider. His son reported that the care provider was understaffed, rushed, and were regularly 1-2 hours late for care visits. David was calling an ambulance out at least once a week, in distress with his breathing. This pattern was driven by his anxiety and the absence of consistent care and reassurance.

Following a stay in hospital, the original care provider did not have capacity to support David and the Local Council, who funded his care, referred him to BelleVie. Initially he rejected support with personal care, so instead, we utilised the time in ways that suited him. His local Team made shorter, more regular visits throughout the day. If David started to feel unwell and anxious, he knew that someone would be visiting soon. While his ongoing health concerns remained, the anxiety that had previously prompted him to dial 999 was alleviated.

David’s son shared that our model of caregiving gave his Dad the reassurance he needed. Because his Dad trusted that we would visit when we said we would, he was no longer compelled to call 999. Unnecessary ambulance call outs reduced from weekly to zero.

BelleVie's approach not only improved David's peace of mind but also ensured he received the necessary care and support to stay safely at home.

This case demonstrates the importance of regular, personalised care in reducing anxiety and preventing unnecessary calls to emergency services and hospital admissions, ultimately helping individuals like David live more securely and comfortably in their own homes.
